History

The Southern African Hypertension Society was founded in 1977 by a handful of health professionals, a number of whom are still active in the Society today.  It is a professional society open to all who work in the health sector and have an interest in hypertension, the related risk factors and target organ damage.
It has held 14 biennial conferences, the 15th congress will be held in May 2007 in Johannesburg
The Southern African Hypertension Society is affiliated to the World Hypertension League.
In March 2001, the executive committee resolved to restructure the Society so that it operated off a digital platform, and this website is a part of that plan.  The constitution is being revised and a draft version is available.  The SAHS is now a section 21 company.  From April 2001 through to December 2004 Boehringer Ingelheim has made an unrestricted educational grant to the SAHS.  This has enabled the:

  • restructuring including the development and maintenance of a website,
  • establishment of a permanent secretariat, and
  • provision of cardiovascular risk factor education programmes.
